What is An Ultrasound For?

Ultrasounds use high-frequency sound waves to receive information that can be seen as an image on a screen. This type of imaging does not use radiation and is considered very safe. Here are three reasons why an ultrasound is needed to confirm your pregnancy details.

1. Know How Far Along You Are

Different options may be available based on how far you are in your pregnancy (gestational age). Medical abortions are for women in their first trimester of pregnancy, and surgical abortions are for those generally in their second trimester. It’s essential to your health to understand how far along you are, especially when considering an abortion.

2. Confirm Pregnancy Location

An ultrasound confirms whether your pregnancy is growing within your uterus or not.

Ectopic pregnancies occur when the pregnancy develops outside the uterus, which can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated by a provider. Seek emergency medical help if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Severe abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Lightheadedness or fainting
  • Shoulder pain

3. Be Aware of Potential Complications

Lastly, ultrasounds verify whether a pregnancy is viable and growing. It can help physicians understand if there are any possible complications or abnormalities and that growth is continuing as usual.

An ultrasound will determine if there is a heartbeat. It’s not uncommon for women to experience a miscarriage. Possible signs and symptoms of a miscarriage include:

  • Pain or cramping in your lower back or abdomen
  • Vaginal spotting or bleeding
  • Fluid or tissue passing from your vagina

Ultrasounds can help provide crucial information about your health, well-being, and options for your pregnancy in the decision process.
